Writing For The Web: Copy Specialist? Or Original Thinker?

I’ve been writing in some form or another since I was in junior high. When I was very young, new, and just starting out I’d write everything I could think of. And most of the time I was copying a style I found in the interesting books and poetry I was reading at the time.

Especially when it came to poetry, I’d work diligently to write like T.S. Eliot or Carl Sandburg or Robert Frost, Keats, or Yeats. And I never really achieved my goal…which is good.

If I had succeeded in copying their style without creating my own, the best I could hope for is to be a hack. Oh sure, we all “rob” a little from those who came before us, but taking their style and calling it your own? Not very original.

And so it goes on the good ol’ internet. It’s amazing how much copying gets done. Particularly when it comes to business writing. So many writers and bloggers are excellent copycats…but not very good at original copy or content. The good news is…the really good ones will stand out more because of this.

Since I consider myself a web copy specialist I’m determined to find what works on the internet and write original material to fit my clients’ needs. And I’m also determined to get them the best search engine results I can, too. After all, what good is even the best original writing if no one ever sees it?

So…when you see me talk about being a “web copy specialist”…it doesn’t mean I copy what others have written. It means the copy I write is original and specialized for the world wide web.

Stay tuned,

Tell It Like It Is

Yeah, when it comes to SEO, most people are either gonna have a serious case of eyes glazing over, or they’re just not even gonna go there. Why? Because it sounds like something you’ll never get. Or it sounds like something boring, mundane, and unattractive.

And done the way most people think of SEO, those descriptions are right.

But don’t think of it the same way as most other internet marketers do. Don’t look at as an additional task or burden you have to bear in the ongoing process of marketing. Just think of it as telling IT like IT is. What’s IT? Your online business. If you do the up-front research on your web business…keyphrase analysis, affiliate research, competitor research…your SEO writing and content will almost take care of itself. It won’t be some additional chore you don’t look forward to.

Think of it this way…if it is something you think is an additional chore, difficult and boring, then you might have gone about your internet marketing all backwards. You may have developed a great idea and then started looking for a market. Is that what you did? If so, don’t lose hope. All is not lost…just possibly a bit more time consuming…and expensive.

And…if you did your research first, then you might be in for a very pleasant surprise when it comes to the SEO writing for your website and business materials. You skipped over some key hurdles, and you’re ready to just tell it like it is.

If you’d like a web copy specialist on your team to help you with this part of your marketing as well as some appealing rich media production, contact me. I’ll be glad to talk to you about it. I’m easy to get along with, not outrageously expensive, and I have a vested interest in the success of the “little guy”. After all…I’m one, too.

Stay tuned,

Web Copy Is More Than Red Headlines, Landing Pages, and SEO or PPC

Those are some useful tools…necessary tools in fact. But they’re just a little bit of what’s going on online. More and more they’re not gonna be enough to get you the results you hope for.

I call myself a web copy specialist because I specialize in writing and producing words and media to get better search engine results, more looks and visits from humans, and a much nicer presentation for your website or blog. Since we’re visual and interactive creatures it only makes sense the internet would end up being a great medium for audio and video.

My three main blogs are all on the first page of Google search engine results for their keyphrases, and that has a lot to do with my increased traffic and conversions. (Google web copy specialist and look for Tony Writes on the first page of results)

And as one well-known internet marketing expert puts it “traffic + conversion = internet marketing success.” Simple. Right?

Yes and no. There’s more to being on the first page of Google than keyphrases. And there’s more to conversion than just getting traffic to your site.

If you want to work on your own copywriting and marketing, that’s great. And here’s what I suggest…

  • Study what successful internet marketing people are doing
  • Do what those people are doing
  • Learn to write well
  • Research niches
  • Start a blog (and get some key plugins) based on your niche research
  • Create a nice “sales” page
  • Start writing your regular blog posts
  • Connect to social media sites
  • And create backlinks to your relevant information
  • …oh yeah…and don’t forget to create some products people want to buy

That’s it. Get those few things going, and you’ll be on your way to internet marketing success. Also…be prepared to be in business for the long haul because those “make-$14,876-in-only-one-month” sales pitches are just selling you hype. Real business requires real work and dedication. But the payoff endures.
